Mom-daughter team offers handmade quilts to Helene victims

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (FOX Carolina) - Nearly three months after Hurricane Helene devastated Western North Carolina, one woman is helping others realize that when life throws you scraps, you make a quilt.

"They're not only losing their little blankies, they're losing their little stuffed animals, they're losing their book, 'Good Night Moon,' which their Grammy read to them 101 times," Barbara Aker, Columbia resident, said about children affected by Helene.

Barbara Aker, who is an avid quilter, loves being a grandma. "He's my precious, and he's just great," she said while describing her grandson.

With her two daughters living in Western North Carolina, Aker knew she had to help when Helene hit.

"I was thinking of my grandson, who is 2-and-a-half years old. He wouldn't care if his house floated down the river, but he would care if he lost his favorite blankie."

So she jumped on a Blog she's a part of and asked if anyone would donate quilts and toys to families in Asheville.

"This is a very time-consuming quilt. This isn't something you do overnight," Aker said while holding up one of the many donated quilts.

People from all over the world donated more than 300 quilts, blankets, toys and books.

"Great Britain, Norway, Ireland...How could someone in Great Britain care about what's going on here, enough to where you spend days and weeks something so personal, something such as a quilt? I was speechless, absolutely speechless," Laurie Aker, director of marketing for Earth Fare, said.

The mother-daughter duo is teaming up to give away these items for free. On Friday, they handed out 60 quilts to the Earth Fare team.

"We have team members who have lost their homes, their entire homes and don't' have a residence right now," Laurie Aker explained. "A lot of us are going through some tough times."

Laurie Aker was also affected during Helene when her family got trapped in their home for several days.

"My heart aches for everyone affected by flooding and loss," she read from a card attached to a quilt.

Many quilts have personalized letters written by the person who made it, proving that quilts are a lot like friends- a great source of comfort.

Earth Fare will host a free giveaway of the items on Sat., December 14 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the store's community room, located at 66 Westgate Pkwy in Asheville.
