Jets star requests to be traded before ever showing up to a practice

Jets star requests to be traded before ever showing up to a practice

It's only been five months since the Philadelphia Eagles traded disgruntled pass rusher Haason Reddick to the New York Jets.

Initially, it looked like the Jets had landed a star on the cheap. Now, Reddick's time in New York is starting to look like a fiasco.

On Monday, multiple outlets reported that Reddick has requested a trade from the Jets. As our friends at NJ.com report, Reddick has yet to report for a single mini-camp or training camp amidst a holdout over his current contract.

In the wake of the reports, Jets general manager Joe Douglas released a statement saying that the team has no plans to trade Reddick.

"We have informed Haason that we will not trade him, that he is expected to be here with his teammates, and that he will continue to be fined per the CBA if he does not report," Douglas wrote in the statement. "Since the trade discussions back in March we have been clear, direct, and consistent with our position. Our focus will remain on the guys we have here as we prepare for the regular season."

It's a bizarre situation for the Jets, who gave up a conditional third-round pick in 2026 for Reddick. According to ESPN, the Jets were "under the impression" that Reddick would play this upcoming season under his current contract.

Reddick's displeasure with his current deal was the reason he was traded from the Eagles. It seems like the deal with the Jets did little to change the situation.

Reddick is in the final year of a three-year contract he signed with the Eagles. He's set to make $14.25 million this year with no guaranteed money.

Reddick has been one of the league's most prolific pass rushers in recent seasons. He spent the last two seasons with Philly, making back-to-back Pro Bowls, recording 16 sacks in 2022 and 11 sacks in 2023.

After losing Bryce Huff in free agency, the Jets swooped in to acquire Reddick to bolster their pass rush. Initially, the move seemed like a steal. However, the inability of New York to get Reddick to report the facility over a well-known issue with his contract is baffling.

The situation is similar to what the New England Patriots are facing with star pass rusher Matthew Judon. However, Judon has at least been present at camp and is currently practicing.

Meanwhile, Reddick has been fined over $1 million for not reporting to camp. For now, he and the Jets appear to be at an impasse.
