Police given powers boost amid increased patrols due to disorder

Police in Kent have been given extra powers tonight (Wednesday) amid concerns over violent disorder. Extra officers are also on patrol this evening following days of violence and disorder from far right groups across the country.

The unrest follows the stabbing of children, three of whom died, in Southport in the North West of England, on July 29. Kent Police said they have added extra patrols in the High Street area of Gillingham, the area around Chatham railway station, the Castle Hill Road area of Dover and the University Road area of Canterbury.

They have also been given additional powers to deal with anyone suspected of being involved in crime or disorder. Anyone who is asked to leave the areas must do so or risk being arrested.

Officers also have the power to stop and search anyone suspected of carrying weapons or planning to commit offences.
