Drew Barrymore Shares Her Tips for Dealing with Mom Burnout and How She Models Good Behavior

Drew Barrymore is sharing what she does to help cope with mom burnout.

The actress, 50, spoke with Real Simple for their new cover story and got candid about how she deals with burnout from parenting her two kids. Barrymore, who shares daughters Frankie, 11, and Olive, 12, with ex Will Kopelman, said she starts by talking with her family.

"When I get burnout from trying to mom really hard and work really hard, I go, 'You know what? This isn't good,' " she told the outlet. "And I know that at the end of the day, the most important thing in life is your relationships. If I'm not putting that first, then I'm on the wrong track."

"So I talk to my kids. And I do try to show them that the more you work on yourself, the happier you're going to be, the more your friendships will thrive," she continued. "We all need tools to navigate the world, and asking for help is everything."

The proud mom said that when it comes to parenting, she tries to model good behavior in an effort to influence her daughters.

"I model how important it is to be kind to others. If you're not good to someone, you will not only ruin their day, but guess what: You're going to feel really bad about yourself. So nix that behavior," Barrymore said. "And I've taught them that if you clean up after yourself, you're going to have more calmness in your space. Your head is as messy as your room is. Someone said that to me, and it changed my life forever."

"I have one daughter who's neater than I will ever be, and one daughter who is beyond messy. But someone reminded me that I was messy when I was young," she continued. "And I was like, 'Oh my God, I'm expecting her to have my 50-year-old woman's standards of cleanliness!'"

Last week, Barrymore appeared on Late Night with Stephen Colbert and spoke about her close friendship with Stephen Colbert's wife, Evelyn. The actress explained that the last time she was supposed to see her, she had to cancel because her daughter got in an e-bike accident.

"The last time we were supposed to get together, my daughter ended up having an accident. I was like calling her..." Barrymore said.

"And she's fine," Colbert added in.

"She's fine, yes. Everything's fine. My daughter, actually she got in an e-bike accident. In France, which sounds so fabulous," Barrymore teased. "Yes, so we were in fabulous France and then she had an e-bike accident."

"And she was like a mile out in the mountains and ripped her whole elbow open. It was completely just, we spent days in an E.R. in and out, she's fine," the mom of two said. "But she ripped off her bra and turned it into a tourniquet, and I was like..."

Colbert jumped in and said that Barrymore raised her daughters right and asks if she'd prepped her daughter at all.

"No! That's just who she is. And I just marvel at her," Barrymore shared.
