RNLI unveils new commemorative plaque to honour fallen

The RNLI has unveiled a new commemorative plaque at the RNLI College in Poole.

The plaque was revealed during a special Remembrance Day service to honour those who died in service during the Second World War.

The service, held on Tuesday, November 11, at the RNLI College, also marked the 80th anniversary of the end of the war.

It remembered 15 RNLI volunteer crew members, two staff, and the organisation's then president, HRH Prince George, Duke of Kent, who died in active service.

Admiral Sir George Zambellas, deputy lieutenant for Dorset, said: "I was honoured to unveil the plaque to commemorate His Royal Highness Prince George, Duke of Kent, the two RNLI staff members, and the contribution of all RNLI volunteers during the Second World War.

"Prince George's death in a military air crash in 1942 marked the loss of not only a Royal figure, but a devoted President whose leadership and compassion left an indelible mark on the RNLI and its wartime mission."

The new plaque will soon be on permanent display on the wall by the RNLI Memorial in Poole, names two RNLI staff members and HRH Prince George, Duke of Kent, and honours 15 crew members.

Representatives from the 12 lifeboat stations that lost crew members during the war attended the service.

Each laid a poppy of remembrance at the RNLI Memorial and read the name and station of their fallen colleagues.

Peter Sparkes, chief executive of the RNLI, added that "it was important to come together and mark Remembrance".
