Prisons service denies alleged neglect of female inmates' menstrual needs

The Federal Capital Territory Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service has debunked reports suggesting that female inmates nationwide are denied access to sanitary products, describing the allegations as misleading and contrary to established procedures.

In a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, the Command's spokesperson, DSC Adamu Samson Duza, said the Service remains committed to its statutory mandate and adheres strictly to global correctional standards.

He explained that sanitary pads and hygiene kits are provided monthly to all female inmates free of charge, with each distribution documented in the welfare registers of custodial centres.

Duza said all facilities under the NCoS operate functional healthcare units equipped with qualified nurses and doctors who cater to inmates' medical needs, including menstrual health.

According to him, inmates also receive free consultations, medications, and referrals to external hospitals when specialised care is necessary.

He noted that the Service continues to enjoy regular support from partners, including civil society organisations and faith-based groups, which donate sanitary materials and conduct hygiene awareness programmes.

He cited a recent donation by the Nigerian Medical Association as one of several ongoing interventions that reinforce the system's commitment to inmate wellbeing.
