A trolley under the Rayburn House building and US Capitol catches fire, one person injured

WASHINGTON (WJLA) -- An electrical fire broke out on a trolley between the Rayburn House Office building and the U.S. Capitol on Thursday evening, prompting some nearby road closures, according to D.C. Fire and EMS Department officials.

The trolley was moving from the Rayburn building when the small fire broke out, but it has since been extinguished, according to a U.S. Capitol Police spokesperson.

D.C. Fire officials said one person was treated for minor injuries, though USCP said no one on board the trolley car was injured.

The underground trolley is one of three lines operating under the U.S. Capitol grounds for members of Congress and their staff. The other two lines run under the Russell and Dirkson Senate Office buildings.

The line under the Rayburn building has been operating since the 1960s, according to the Architect of the Capitol.

Independence Avenue is closed in both directions between Washington Avenue, Southwest, and Second Street Southeast as fire crews investigate. Seek alternate routes.
