CINCINNATI (WXIX) - The Space Weather Prediction Center has issued a Severe (G4) Geomagnetic Storm Watch Sunday and Monday. Should G4 levels occur, the aurora may become visible over much of the northern half of the United States, weather permitting.
A G4 storm watch is rare.
A coronal mass ejection, or CME, erupted from the Sun on May 30. A CME is an eruption of solar materials from the Sun.
The strength of the CME as it hits Earth determines the strength of the geomagnetic storm. The stronger the geomagnetic storm, the farther south the northern lights can travel.
The true nature of this CME's geomagnetic storm potential will not be known until it is picked up on satellites one million miles from Earth.
With little to no clouds around the Tri-State on June 1 and June 2, if G4 levels occur, we should get spectacular viewing of the Northern Lights from our backyards!
Give yourself the best opportunity to catch the Northern Lights by getting away from city lights and staying up-to-date with the weather and space weather forecast. You can get BOTH right here at FOX19!
