Fans Rave Over 'Iconic Scene' of a Whale Photobombing Olympic Surfers During Competition

As fans cheered on the athletes competing for a medal in surfing in Tahiti at the 2024 Olympics, the semi-finalists got interrupted by an unexpected guest -- a whale breaching the water's surface.

The official NBC Olympics account on X shared a clip of the memorable moment, writing in the caption, "The Olympic surfing semi finalists had a WHALE stop by. #ParisOlympics πŸ‹."

Two commentators were talking about the competition over footage of surfers sitting on their boards when the video cut to another area of the water as the whale made its surprise appearance.

"Wow! That's incredible," said one of the commentators, as the other joked, "That's a 10 right there."

Fans were equally stunned to see the whale, such as one who wrote, "Iconic scenes ✨πŸ”₯ my heart would have stopped πŸ˜„."

"The whale lives there. you are stopping by," someone else chimed in.

Viewers also joked around about the whale competing for an award, with replies like, "what was the score for the whale? seems like its trick was good!" and "Nice technique, good form. He (or she) deserves at least a bronze. πŸ₯‡πŸ₯ˆπŸ₯‰πŸ˜Š."

"Free Willy wants the gold," said a similar reply, as a different fan comment read, "The whale said 'look what I can do.'"

The surfing event for the Paris Olympics concluded on Monday, Aug. 5, with U.S. athlete Caroline Marks taking the gold for the women's competition. Brazil's Tatiana Weston-Webb won silver and France's Johanne Defay got the bronze medal.

For the men's competition, France's Kauli Vaast got the gold medal, Australia's Jack Robinson took silver, and Brazil's Gabriel Medina got bronze. The surfing events were originally set to finish late last week, but a lack of waves led to a delay.

The 2024 Paris Olympics will conclude with the closing ceremony on Aug. 11 after the athletic events wrap up and all the awards are won.
