The perennial power controlled the line of scrimmage on a frigid Friday night at Gillette Stadium to topple North Attleborough, 21-10, in the Division 3 Super Bowl, securing its fourth state title since 2016.
The Warriors (13-0) are 38-1 over the last three seasons, the only loss coming to Catholic Memorial in last year's Division 2 Super Bowl prior to an alignment shift, and have made eight Super Bowl appearances over the past nine seasons.
"I wanted it so bad for them," said KP coach Brian Lee, who is 165-30 since taking over in 2005. "It's so cliché, but these kids work so hard. We talked before the game about, what can you give, extra. You have to give extra for your teammates. Our last practice, hearing from those kids, what it means, how much they invest for the minimal amount of playing time. I'm so blessed, so lucky, that I found KP and these kids."
The defending D3 state champion, North Attleborough (10-3) rode senior captain Frankie Strachan back to the Super Bowl, but the workhorse back broke his right foot in the first quarter.
"It changes pretty much everything that we were doing," said North coach Michael Strachan, Frankie's uncle. "He's been the heart and soul of our team all season. He's the anchor when he's out there. He makes everything calm down, he's been a great leader for us all year. I'm proud of our kids for bouncing back. We didn't quit."
Senior quarterback Dylan Brousseau kept the Rocketeers offense afloat with a couple of deep passes and scrambles, but they couldn't match possessions with the machine-like efficiency of King Philip's ground-based approach.
Senior tailback Keigan Canto-Osorio and Tallan King combined for 252 rushing yards and quarterback Zach Gebhard engineered several long scoring drives, capping the first with a 2-yard touchdown plunge.
"It's just a great feeling, finishing here at Gillette with a win," said Canto-Osorio. "I get another ring after I got my one sophomore year, but this one I earned, I didn't play too much then, but I earned this one."
Using six or seven linemen per play to set the tone for those skill players, King Philip chewed up clock and kept the ball away from their Hockomock League rivals.
Liam McGrath and Patrick Terio came up with interceptions, linebacker Kyle Danson made several key plays, and King combined with his brother, Liam, for a couple of defensive stops in the backfield to deny any comeback bid.
"Since January, we've put blood, sweat, tears, everything, these kids have poured everything into this [program]," Tallan King said. "I'm just so happy to win it with the kids I grew up with, I'm on top of the world right now."
