"We are just beyond proud to make it to 50 years, and it is our golden celebration," Alexandra Megilligan, Greek Fest Executive Committee member said.
On Thursday, along Bayou St. John they were setting up food tents, but inside, volunteers were cooking, baking and packaging all the Greek goodies.
"This year we are actually bringing back Feta fries, which we haven't sold in awhile. We will also have a new specialty Greek dessert that's drenched in orange zest syrup," she said.
While there are new additions to this year's Greek Fest, there will also be favorite dishes coming back like goat burgers, gyros, lamb and baklava.
"This year I think they made about 22,000 pieces of baklava," Megilligan said.
She said that she loves how much Greek Fest has grown.
"Initially it started very small and started out with ladies coming and bringing pastries they made. For about 35 years they've been making the pastries on-site," she said.
Megilligan said they are extremely excited for their 50th anniversary.
"We're hospitable in nature. We love to entertain, and we love to cook for people. I think we can make it to another 50 years and beyond," she said.
Greek Fest is being held on Friday, May 23 from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday, May 24 from 11 a.m. 10 p.m. and Sunday, May 25 from 11 a.m. 8 p.m.
There will also be Hellenic dance performances, tours of the Cathedral, and soprano Irini Kyriakidoulrini will perform "Sunset Serenade" singing love songs at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
