BENICIA -- The Benicia Library will host the third annual Nowruz, Persian New Year Celebration, 6 p.m. March 21.
Nowruz (also spelled Norooz, Nawruz or Newroz) is celebrated on the spring equinox, marking the first day of spring and symbolizing renewal, rebirth and the triumph of light over darkness.
This tradition has been celebrated in many countries including Iran, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Central Asia, parts of the Middle East, the Balkans and South Asia.
After the library closes for the day, the community is invited to celebrate with sweets, music, poetry, dance and more. All ages are welcome.
The library will also host a Haft-Seen Table display through April 2. The symbolic table, set with items all starting with the Persian letter "S", each representing prosperity, health and renewal.
