The episode follows forensics and investigations teams as they worked to convict the Perry Barr killer - who was found not guilty of murder by a jury at Birmingham Crown Court.
A plea of manslaughter due to diminished responsibility that O'Neill had offered during the trial was accepted.
O'Neill, then aged 32, was jailed for life with a minimum of ten years at Stafford Crown Court in March last year.
The court heard he left his friend badly bruised with puncture wounds across his body and a 10p sized wound by his temple.
When O'Neill was later arrested by police in Glasgow, he was found wearing blood-stained clothing and holding his Birmingham to Glasgow bus ticket.
He refused to answer any questions in interview but forensic analysis of the blood on his joggers, along with phone analysis, were vital in proving where he'd been on the night of the murder.
The latest episode of Forensics: The Real CSI is on BBC Two is on at 9pm tonight or available on iPlayer from 6am today, Sunday, March 9.
