Telecom network hack results in phishing links sent to millions

The tech industry is growing every day, and so are the bad actors. A teen named Remington Ogletree hacked two unidentified telecom networks and a financial institution in the US causing $4 million in damages. The hacker is reportedly a member of the hacking group "Scattered Spider" which made headlines in the past for breaching the cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase and the gaming company Riot Games.

After the accused hacker broke into the telecom companies' systems, he reportedly sent out 8.5 million texts containing phishing links across a European country in October 2023. He had been doing this for quite some time until he caught some big fish. The hacker tried to steal cryptocurrency from such users with this trick.

That's not all, Ogletree had access to incoming and outgoing calls of numerous targets. The hacker apparently also trapped 12 employees of a US-based financial firm giving him access to their accounts. This allowed him to steal sensitive information from them.

The texts sent by the hacker were disguised as messages from a cryptocurrency exchange or a video game company. These details are coming out now as authorities finally made his case public.

This isn't the first event of a hacker breaking into telecom systems. More recently, there were reports about a group of Chinese hackers breaching multiple telecom networks in the US. The phones of President Donald Trump, JD Vance, and Kamala Harris' campaign staff were reportedly the primary target of that hack.

It's worth noting that the US authorities suggest that the hackers are still inside the affected telecom networks. No one knows when and how long it will take to find and remove them from affected systems.

After the report spread like wildfire, T-Mobile responded that the Chinese hacker couldn't breach its systems. Moreover, the smartphone carriers giant claims it evicted some suspicious actors from its network too.
