Was Blake Lively destined to play Ladypool? The actress speaks on the wild whirlwind of circumstances that led to her cameo in Deadpool and Wolverine.
Fans were rabid in their speculation about who could be playing Ladypool prior to Deadpool and Wolverine hitting theaters. Everyone's name was on the table. From Taylor Swift, to Morena Baccarin, to even just putting Ryan Reynolds into a wig. However, the cameo was much simpler than the internet thought, with the female variant of the Merc with a Mouth being played by Blake Lively.
Blake Lively, who's the longtime wife of Deadpool and Wolverine star Ryan Reynolds, wasn't the only member of their family to make a cameo. Almost every one of their kids made a short appearance, from Inez Reynolds playing Kidpool to their infant Olin Reynolds playing Babypool. However, Lively revealed her role as Ladypool was a lot more complicated than a familial connection.
In the wake of Deadpool and Wolverine, plenty of fans have said that Deadpool was a character created for Ryan Reynolds. Yet the truth seems to be that Ladypool was created for Blake Lively. Literally! When speaking on her cameo, Lively broke down how the character's creator had actually taken inspiration from her likeness a decade prior.
"Well, that was like a neat little surprise," Lively explained on Kelly and Mark. "Rob Liefeld, who drew Ladypool...I had no idea but in 2010, he drew Lady Deadpool and at the same time, I was cast in the Green Lantern with my now husband, who was not my husband then."
"The timeline, I know it gets a little wonky. You need a conspiracy yarn to track it. But, basically, there was no association with Ryan; Ryan had no association with Deadpool. He was supposed to make this movie. But, it was a pipe dream. It wasn't ever really going to happen."
"Rob Liefeld drew Ladypool, and I guess he and his wife watched Gossip Girl? So, it was just kind of crazy how the world...you know, my husband and I got married and Deadpool was made. They were looking for a Ladypool, so, you know..."
Blake Lively is far from the only celebrity whose likeness has been used to inspire a comic book character. However, these insane circumstances almost makes her cameo as Ladypool in Deadpool and Wolverine seem to good to be true. If there's one thing to take from it, it's that sometimes even the craziest dreams, like Ryan Reynolds ever making a hit superhero movie, may just be crazy enough to actually work out.
