'Very simple' method to clear condensation from windows uses just 1 common item - Daily Record

Winter has returned with a vengeance, prompting many homeowners to seek practical solutions to keep their properties free from the various unwanted consequences that accompany the drop in temperatures.

Condensation poses a worry for numerous people, with many turning to social media looking for useful tips and guidance to clear it from their homes and vehicles. Fortunately, there's an abundance of experts and amateurs alike eager to share their suggestions, tips and methods online.

Couple Richard and Paul operate several social media accounts where they document their life together, alongside domestic and gardening advice. In one popular YouTube clip, Richard revealed his method for eliminating condensation in their bedroom.

He clarified they "do not live in a damp house" but, like many others, they do encounter condensation "if the temperature drops below a certain point."

Speaking directly to the camera, he said: "And of course, we've got two of us in the bedroom breathing away all night which is kind of the source of the warm moist air - you can't get away from that, that's life, that's reality."

His bedroom is a "very large" space featuring three "old style double glazed" sash windows. While th

e windows underwent renovation several years back, they're still more susceptible to condensation than contemporary alternatives.

However, Richard possesses a clever solution. He revealed: "My tip today is how to prevent it (condensation) building up further, once you've wiped your windows.

"It's a very simple, simple trick - I use a fan. Yeah, an ordinary fan, it works like a de-mister, point it towards the windows, turn it on and the condensation will not build up.

"Also, with a fan, if the condensation build-up is very light, point the fan towards the window and it will actually get rid of the condensation for you - without wiping."

He had additional guidance, too. Richard went on: "The other thing to mention, if you are using a cloth to wipe away your condensation, make sure you dry it properly - preferably in another room with ventilation.

"Of course, the other way to get rid of condensation, and indeed stop it building up in the first place, is to open the window.

"Well, if I were to open three windows in here on a very bitterly cold winter's day, I'm going to lose all my heat and heat equals money and I don't want to do that.

"So, this is the way that I manage it on a very cold day - by wiping, putting the fan on and keeping the air circulated. Try it, it works."

1. Improve ventilation - try opening your windows for a few minutes each day to let moist air escape, as well as using extractor fans where possible

2. Reduce indoor moisture - you can do this by drying clothes outdoors, covering pots and pans while cooking and keeping your bathroom and kitchen doors closed

3. Increase window temperature - grab some curtains or blinds to drape over them, as well as moving furniture away to boost airflow

4. Use a dehumidifier - these are great appliances to remove excess moisture that's in your home

5. Wipe down windows - this helps to remove moisture and prevent mould growth, which can be detrimental to your health
