Leighton Hospital cancer centre recognised for care excellence

A HOSPITAL cancer centre has been recognised for excellence in care.

Leighton Hospital's Macmillan Unit has been awarded The Christie Quality Mark, following a rigorous unannounced inspection by three senior nurses on Monday, October 6.

Part of Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the cancer centre retained the accreditation, having first received it in 2019.

Sharan Ingram, matron for quality and standards at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, said: "The team at The Macmillan Unit at Leighton Hospital demonstrated outstanding commitment to delivering quality, patient-centred care in all aspects of their cancer treatment, from bloods nearer home to chemotherapy treatment, counselling and support for Christie and Leighton patients.

"Their professionalism and passion for delivering the best possible outcomes for patients really shone throughout the review, and this accreditation of achieving The Christie Quality Mark is thoroughly deserved."

The assessment covered areas such as patient-centred care, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and upholding The Christie's values.

During the inspection, staff and patients were interviewed, data was reviewed, facilities were checked, and care delivery was observed.

The Christie Quality Mark recognises best practice and ensures a consistent standard of care across all affiliated sites.

Katie Edge, Macmillan lead systemic anti-cancer therapy nurse at Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: "I am extremely proud of the team for achieving the accreditation.

"The Christie Mark involves a strict criteria and rigorous checks, so this result is a testament to their hard work and dedication.

"On the inspection day, we were able to display the excellent care that we provide and show what makes our services so special.

"Most importantly, the feedback from our patients to the Christie inspection team was exemplary, and that's the positive outcome that we value most from this assessment."

Scott Malton, chief nursing officer at Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, also praised the team's achievement.

Mr Malton said: "Achieving the Christie Quality Mark once again is a fantastic endorsement of the exceptional care our teams provide every day.

"I'm incredibly proud of everyone involved in maintaining these exceptional standards, which ensure our patients are able to receive high-quality care, close to their homes."
