Record €154 million allocated to St Vincent de Paul in 2026 Budget - The Malta Independent

Government is allocating more than €154 million to St Vincent de Paul residential home next year, a record amount that accounts for almost 46% of the total €337 million budget for Active Ageing, according to a statement issued by the Parliamentary Secretariat for Active Ageing.

The allocation represents an increase of more than €18 million compared to 2025 and reflects government's ongoing commitment to strengthening geriatric care in Malta, the statement said.

Parliamentary Secretary for Active Ageing Malcolm Paul Agius Galea said that this increase is a clear sign of government's vision not only to offer care, but to build a complete system that works for every stage of an elderly person's life.

"From palliative services to specialised clinics and intermediate care, we want to be present with a response for every need," he said.

Recent investments include the total renovation of the St Francis 1 and 2 Wards, the opening of a new palliative care ward, the installation of a new CT scanner, and the start of a project for an MRI scanner and dialysis service.

The first therapeutic farm, Razzett l-Hena, has also opened, alongside recreational spaces such as mini golf and a bocci pitch.

The Secretariat also said that next year, a tender will be issued for the construction of a new 300-bed hospital within St Vincent de Paul, described as an investment that will "bring a revolution in elderly care in Malta".

The statement said that the 2026 Budget is aimed not only at addressing current challenges but also at sustainably improving the quality of life of older persons as part of Vision Malta 2050, where ageing is framed as a stage of "activism, knowledge and appreciation", whether at home, in the community or in long-term care.

St Vincent de Paul CEO Jorgen Souness said that the investment, "not only means improvement in infrastructure, but reflects the respect we have towards every resident, that their life should continue to be active, safe, and with care that they deserve."
