The German international's fitness levels are being monitored by Eddie Howe ahead of the home encounter with Athletic Bilbao
Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe will make a late call on Nick Woltemade ahead of the clash with Athletic Bilbao tonight - admitting the star is suffering from fatigue.
That was the reason Howe cited for the £69million man's hooking during the 3-1 loss to West Ham at the London Stadium at the weekend. And going into the encounter with the La Liga side, Howe will carefully consider his options in terms of selection with a crucial trip to Brentford on the horizon.
When asked about Woltemade's fitness levels going into this evening's clash, Howe said: "We're well aware we've thrust him into every game, near enough.
"I thought he looked a little bit fatigued and taking him off [at West Ham] was the case of making a decision I felt would benefit the team and Nick going forward because he's carrying a lot of load on his shoulders. If at any stage I feel he is fatigued, I need to act to help him."
Newcastle have been low on striking alternatives this season. After Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson's departures, Woltemade and Yoane Wissa were brought into the ranks before the transfer window shut, only for the latter to pick up a knee injury on international duty just a few days later.
Wissa has yet to kick a ball for Newcastle, meaning the weight of responsibility has been placed squarely on Woltemade's shoulders. William Osula is in reserve, but his erratic performances - and an ongoing niggle - mean Howe is yet to fully trust him from the start.
One option Howe may opt for is playing Anthony Gordon through the middle and offering wide men like Anthony Elanga and Harvey Barnes a chance.
Gordon was taken off at half-time in Stratford and Howe spoke more about the England international's situation last night. He said: "I've had many discussions with Anthony and will continue to. He's a very honest player, and there's no lack of effort, commitment, or desire to do well.
"He's very driven to succeed and that's one of his biggest qualities. Sometimes things fall that way, a game of football is a game of football regardless of the competition. He's an outstanding player.
"Of course, we need more from everybody in the Premier League. It's not just Anthony it's everybody connected with all of our styles of play, defending and attacking.
"The league is such a high level regardless of who you play and of course there's added challenges, mentally, when you're returning from Champions League or cup games and we need to make that transition better."
