Jake on brotherly bond

Jake on brotherly bond

Folkestone forward Jake Hutchinson is not the only member of his family in goalscoring form.

Hutchinson got the winner in promotion-chasing Isthmian Premier Invicta's 2-1 victory over surprise strugglers Billericay on Saturday as they bounced back from last midweek's 2-1 away defeat to Hashtag United, a first league loss of this campaign.

It's six goals in seven matches for the 23-year-old summer signing. But older brother Isaac Hutchinson, on loan at League 2 Cheltenham from Bristol Rovers, also knows where the net is.

The midfielder, 25, got the FA Cup tie's only goal in the Robins' 1-0 first-round triumph against Bradford on Saturday.

It was his fourth goal this season, having scored inside two minutes on his debut in a 1-0 league win against Accrington Stanley in September.

"I'm enjoying a bit of a run," said Jake. "It's the same for my brother who, since he joined Cheltenham, has got into a similar vein of form.

"We have had a couple of years that we have been playing for clubs where it's been difficult, where we don't really have that trust of the management.

"I've had it before and my brother definitely has where you have that weight on your shoulders and, as soon as you do something wrong, everyone's on top of you. But we're both at clubs where we have got stability.

"That's testament to both clubs and their fans."

Perhaps unsurprisingly, there is a bit of sibling rivalry between the pair.

"There's a bit of friendly brotherly rivalry," said Jake, whose dad, Tobi, has managed Eastbourne United. "We're always out to outscore each other and there's a bit of talk about it in our family chat.

"To have that, it's always good."

Hutchinson got Folkestone's second goal against Billericay at Cheriton Road just after the hour, minutes after the visitors had levelled through former Gillingham and Dartford striker Liam Nash, who cancelled out midfielder Dean Rance's first-half strike.

He reflected: "It was a really good win, especially after the disappointment of Tuesday night, going to play Hashtag and losing.

"To bounce back against Billericay - who are not doing the best this season but have got a lot of players that should be playing at the level above - was really good. We knew they could hurt us, given the chance.

"The goal they scored came from a bit of poor defending from us, really, but we were pretty much in control for most of the game."

Hutchinson struck as he headed a delivery by recently-recruited defender Ike Orji past Ricay keeper Sam Donkin.

He said: "It was a brilliant ball from Ike.

"I said to a few people afterwards it was a cross, which is a striker's dream.

"It was one you don't have to do a lot with. Ike has come in and settled into the group really well, even though he's not been with us that long.

"He is already showing us and the fans what he is capable of."

It's been a topsy-turvy campaign for Hutchinson, who has only recently rediscovered his scoring touch after a barren spell that came following his goal in Folkestone's opening-day 1-1 draw at Chichester.

"It's always nice to score," he added. "For it to be a match-deciding goal, that's even better.

"It's been a bit of a weird season. In pre-season, I thought I did really well and I scored in the first game of the season - but then went seven games without scoring.

"You do wonder if you're ever going to score again. But now, I've got six in seven games again.

"It's been an enjoyable time."

Hutchinson is relishing the chance to work alongside 31-year-old former Charlton, Ipswich and AFC Wimbledon frontman Joe Pigott.

He said: "I don't think anyone thought Joe would end up at Folkestone this season after where he has been for most of his career but, obviously, we're buzzing to have him.

"For myself as a younger player, I can pick his brains a little bit. He has been brilliant with it. He's really open.

"You see another striker come in and - especially when it's someone of his quality - you can think 'Oh no, that's my place in the team gone.'. But you've got to think more 'Right, he's someone who will help us as a team.'.

"It's about strengthening the squad, that's all it does, and we have got a lot of games to play between now and Christmas.

"It's then really down to the player to take their chance."

There is another familiar face for Hutchinson at Folkestone now in midfielder Adam Lovatt.

The duo played together at Tonbridge on respective loans in 2021, with 26-year-old Lovatt making his debut for Jay Saunders' side against Billericay.

"I played with Adam at Tonbridge," Hutchinson stated.

"It was a really good debut for him. A few in the squad already knew him, as well as the gaffer, Lloyd Blackman and Tom Parkinson.

"I think Parky played with him at Tonbridge. He's another player that really boosts our squad.

"He trained with us on Thursday night. To have one training session and then perform how he did on debut, I think that was really positive.

"It shows we have got a lot of competition for places."

Invicta, due at Welling tonight, face Potters Bar this weekend.

They will host Cray Wanderers in the league next Tuesday.
