MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - We're used to seeing rallies for sports events.
But Saturday, there was a rally to beat a very formidable opponent: breast cancer.
The event was held at the New Harvest Ministry Church, and organizers say it was sponsored by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.
That group supports what it calls a breast cancer initiative of lifestyle.
Internal Medicine Physician Mark Hammond said, "We're recommending a very healthy plant-based diet, fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains, seeds, beans legumes: movement, just walking 30 minutes a day, keeping a healthy body weight, limiting or avoiding alcohol."
We talked to some young people at the rally who tried vegan food.
One said, "I never had vegan food, but it was good, though."
Another said, "It tasted like Teriyaki chicken."
The program is especially meaningful for Kim Green, one of the hosts, because she says she is a stage four breast cancer survivor.
Greene says she found she had breast cancer during the pandemic.
Green said, "So to have different organizations and people just come out and support, it means a lot, It's very encouraging for any breast cancer fighter and survivor because it lets you know people care. And that's what you need to know: that you are not alone in this fight."
Mark Hammond says lifestyle can empower people to be healthy.
