A software issue led to thousands of reported Verizon outages across the country Saturday.

According to the website Downdetector, reports of Verizon outages began mid-morning Saturday, with spikes into the afternoon.

Nationwide, more than 10,000 Verizon outages were reported as of 2:40 p.m. ET according to Downdecector. By 3:40 p.m., that number had ballooned to more than 23,000, the site showed.

A spokesperson for Verizon said the company was "aware of a software issue impacting wireless service for some customers."

"Our engineers are engaged and we are working quickly to identify and solve the issue," the spokesperson said late in the afternoon.

Verizon customers should visit the Check Network Status page for updates on service, the company said.

No ETA for full restoration of service was immediately available.

An outage map from Downdetector Saturday showed Verizon outages in major cities including Chicago, Minneapolis, Miami, Atlanta, Cincinnati and Los Angeles.

Users on Downdetector left comments saying their phones were displaying no service and "SOS" mode on-and-off.
