Between the stacks: Design training in session

Did you know that you can learn to sew at our library? Or that you can use our Cricut, an electronic cutting machine to create stickers, cards and labels? Or that you can design your own unique T-shirt? Come check out the Wando Mount Pleasant Library makerspace; a communal public workshop in which makers can work on personal projects and collaborate with one another.

The makerspace at Wando also has an embroidery machine, a serger (a type of professional sewing machine), 3D printers and a Glowforge (a laser cutter and engraver). Most of the equipment is available for patrons to use once they have been trained by the makerspace coordinator. Once trained, the makerspace is available during most of the hours that the library is open. Because of the nature of the equipment and liability issues, this studio is open to people who are 18 and up.

In addition to equipment, the makerspace offers a variety of group trainings for the sewing machines, Cricut and heat press. There are also a variety of other workshops offered here including learning to knit, crochet, weave and a bimonthly knitting/fiber club.

You can also sign up for creative studio classes. We offer a large variety of classes including step by step painting, bookbinding, recycled book sculpture, journal making and seasonal crafts such as decorated mason jars and tree ornaments.

Possibly the best thing about our makerspace is the joy that patrons get from creating and learning new skills. Additionally, it provides a great social outlet for those who are interested in meeting other makers. It is incredibly rewarding and inspiring to see the variety of projects that people create.

Where can you find out more information about upcoming trainings and classes? Several ways! Pick up a monthly adult printed calendar at the library. Usually, each studio has a list of upcoming classes for the current month on the door.

Additionally, don't forget to check our online calendar: https://ccplsc.libcal.com/calendar. Use the filter menu on the left-hand side to limit programs to just Wando Mount Pleasant branch. Or see what other branches are offering. On the right-hand side, you can choose what view to display; daily, weekly and monthly.

It is also worth noting that there are four other makerspaces in our Charleston County Public Library system. They are located at the Keith Summey branch in North Charleston, Baxter-Patrick branch on James Island, the Bees Ferry branch in West Ashley and St. Paul's in Hollywood branch. Once patrons are trained at the Wando location, they can use the same equipment at another branch.

To schedule training or to ask about our equipment, contact [email protected]. We hope that you come by and explore our makerspace and enjoy some of the programs offered in it!

Rachel Suntop is the Creative Studio Librarian at the Wando Mount Pleasant Library located at 1400 Carolina Park Boulevard.
