Sabres director of player development Adam Mair placed on leave after arrest

The Buffalo Sabres have placed director of player development Adam Mair on leave after he was arrested on Sept. 4 for allegedly driving while intoxicated.

According to a spokesperson for the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, police were investigating a car crash in Pittsford, N.Y., a suburb of Rochester, when they arrested Mair at 4:30 p.m. He is facing charges of three felonies and three misdemeanors, including aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child in a vehicle and endangering the welfare of a child. He was charged under the state's Leandra's Law in connection with having three juvenile passengers in the car, the spokesperson said. There were no injuries as a result of the crash.

"We are aware of the situation involving Adam Mair," the Sabres said in a statement. "He has been placed on administrative leave. We will have no further comment at this time."

According to a report from WGRZ in Buffalo, Mair rear-ended another car. Police noted in the report that, while speaking with Mair, they could "smell the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from his breath, and his eyes were bloodshot and glassy. His speech was slow and mumbled, and he was using the front passenger door of his vehicle to support himself while standing."

Mair failed field sobriety tests and initially refused a breathalyzer test but later agreed and blew a .20-percent, more than twice the legal limit of .08-percent, WGRZ reported.

Mair, who played for the Sabres as a forward from 2002-2010, has worked with the organization in player development since 2015. Current general manager Kevyn Adams elevated Mair to director of player development in 2021. With Mair on leave, the rest of the player development staff will absorb his duties, the Sabres said. The player development staff consists of Tim Kennedy, Zach Redmond, and Seamus Kotyk, who is in charge of goalies.

This week, the Sabres began rookie camp in Buffalo before playing three games in a prospect tournament this weekend. Mair typically would have played a crucial role in onboarding the team's rookies at camp and coaching players during practices.

His court date in Pittsford is set for Oct. 2.
