Central Saanich police issued a cougar-sighting alert on the morning of Dec. 7 after a group of three cougars was reported in the 7300-block of West Saanich Road. No conflicts with people have been reported.
The province advises residents to stay calm and keep the animal in sight if they encounter a cougar.
Children should be picked up immediately, as sudden movement or noise can provoke an attack according to the B.C. Conservation Officer Service.
People are urged to back away slowly, give the animal space to escape and avoid running or turning their back.
If a cougar shows interest or follows, officials say to respond assertively by maintaining eye contact, making loud noise and appearing as large as possible.
Residents are also encouraged to reduce attractants by bringing pets indoors, especially at night, and storing garbage securely.
Anyone who suspects a cougar is lingering in their neighbourhood should contact the Conservation Officer Service at 1-877-952-7277. Threatening or aggressive behaviour should also be reported immediately.
