Why I'm Running: 'My goal is finally coming to fruition'

I picked up running not just to improve my fitness, but because I wanted a new challenge in life and a strong sense of personal accomplishment.

At the time, I realized that I was not a runner because I could barely run a block without getting out of breath. During a beach vacation, I set out on a run, and with the cooling breeze of the ocean supporting me, I was able to complete it without stopping. At that moment, I knew I was going to become a runner, and I decided to set a goal for myself of running a marathon.

I fell in love with long-distance running and ran that first marathon in the fall of 2009.

Crossing the finish line not only gave me more confidence, I believe it gave me more freedom, a sense of control over my life, plus an incredible sense of achievement. I felt I could do almost anything.

Since that first marathon, I have completed 25 over the course of 15 years!

I really started by getting a running book at the library, developing a training schedule, and making some changes to my diet. I eliminated most processed foods and started eating more whole foods and drinking enough water.

I'm really excited that my goal, the Boston Marathon, is finally coming to fruition. I knew that it would be my last, and I would be running with a charity group to help with cancer research. I will be running the Boston Marathon on April 21, 2025, with the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge Team, and it will be a dream come true. I really hope that my story can encourage people to go out there and find what they are passionate about and to take the first step to start.
