Chargers wanted Diontae Johnson, but another team beat them out

Chargers wanted Diontae Johnson, but another team beat them out

Instead, the Houston Texans have come away with the veteran wide receiver off the waiver wire, a great move for them following the devastating injury suffered by Tank Dell on Saturday. Shortly after the transaction, it was revealed that one other team put in a claim for Johnson... the Chargers.

The Texans were ahead of the Chargers in the waiver order and were awarded the former Pro Bowl receiver.

The Ravens waived Johnson on Friday, less than two months after acquiring him ahead of this season's trade deadline. But it was not a great fit for him as he caught just one pass for the team and was suspended for a game for conduct detrimental to the team after refusing to enter the team's Week 13 game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

It made sense for a team looking to upgrade its roster ahead of the playoffs to grab Johnson. The Chargers are on that list, but the Texans had priority.

It would have been a good move for the Chargers. It would have seen Jim Harbaugh acquiring a player who had played with his brother John in Baltimore, something Jim is making a habit of doing after already adding J.K. Dobbins, Gus Edwards and Bradley Bozeman, among others.

The Chargers have needed to upgrade the wide receiver position since the training camp opened. It's too bad that when the team tried to pull the trigger on a move, it was blocked.
