Things to do in the Chattanooga area this weekend include Last Minute Market, holiday concerts | Chattanooga Times Free Press

Get in some last-minute holiday shopping at the Last Minute Market this weekend. Or, enjoy the sounds of the season at a holiday concert, including the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera's Home for the Holidays. Here's this weekend's chronology.

ARTS

-- Photographic Society of Chattanooga continues its autumn/holiday show at the Gallery at Blackwell, 71 Eastgate Loop. Society members have their works on display and available for purchase. Gallery hours are 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. The show will run through Jan. 24. Learn more at chattanoogaphoto.org.

-- North River Civic Center, 1009 Executive Drive, Suite 102, Hixson, continues "Spices of Fall," a celebration of hues and textures from nature trails, both global and local. -- In-Town Gallery, 26A Frazier Ave., continues its exhibition "Wood Works," featuring the woodworking artistry of Roger Harvey. Gallery hours are 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Saturday and noon-5 p.m. Sunday. The exhibition will run through Dec. 31. Learn more at intowngallery.com.

-- Area 61 Gallery, 721 Broad St., Suite 100, continues its exhibition, "Painting the Emotions of Nature, A New Season," featuring works by Jaime Barks. Gallery hours are noon-6 p.m. Monday, Thursday-Sunday and by appointment Tuesday-Wednesday. The exhibition will run through December, and the gallery will close at the end of the month. -- Association for Visual Arts, 30 Frazier Ave., continues its annual all-members salon show, featuring work from more than 150 local member artists. -- Liquidambar Art Gallery at Sequatchie Valley Institute, 1233 Cartwright Loop, Whitwell, is open to showcase ceramics, glass, metal ornaments, kaleidoscopes and paintings by local artists. All items are available for purchase. Visitors can also walk the forest nature trails while at the gallery. -- Creative Arts Guild, 520 W. Waugh St., Dalton, concludes two exhibitions Wednesday. In Gallery Five20, there is "Mindful," featuring works by Aimee Maschhoff and Renel Plouffe. In Gallery One11, there is "Am I Here?," featuring works by Jill Pope. Gallery hours are 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday and by appointment Saturday-Sunday. DANCE

-- Chattanooga Dance Theatre will present Nooga Nutcracker at 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday at the UTC Fine Arts Center, 752 Vine St. The production features several forms of dance, including ballet, modern and jazz styles and acrobatics. The retelling of "The Nutcracker" is set in present-day Chattanooga and features the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Mocs. Tickets cost $24-$35. Learn more at utc.edu/fine-arts-center.

FILM

-- Tennessee Aquarium IMAX 3D Theater, 201 Chestnut St., continues screening "The Polar Express," with showings at 11 a.m. Wednesday-Thursday and 10 a.m. and noon Friday-Sunday. The film is rated G. -- Walker Theatre, 399 McCallie Ave., will have two Christmas movie screenings this Friday. At 3 p.m., there will be a screening of "Elf." The film is rated PG. -- Songbirds, 206 W. Main St., will have several shows through the weekend. At 8 p.m. Thursday, there will be Jazz Futures, blending performance with immersive education. Admission is free, and donations are accepted. At 6:30 p.m. Friday, there will be an installment in the Music + Food series, featuring music by Southern Drawl and food by Civil Provisions and Bar. Tickets cost $50-$125. At 7 p.m. Saturday, there will be an open mic night, with 10 spots available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Admission is free, and donations are accepted. -- Chattanooga Symphony and Opera will have its Home for the Holidays concerts at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday at Memorial Auditorium, 399 McCallie Ave. The concerts will feature the symphony, its chorus and various community groups. Attendees will be able to have their picture taken with Santa and drop off their letter for the North Pole. The symphony will be collecting toys for Be the Change Youth Initiative's toy drive. -- Barrelhouse Ballroom, 1501 Long St., will have two shows this weekend. At 9 p.m. Saturday, Yacht Rock Schooner will perform. Tickets cost $15 in advance or $20 the day of show. -- Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park will present a 90-minute, less than a mile, ranger-led hike at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Chickamauga Battlefield, 3370 Lafayette Road, Fort Oglethorpe. The program will explore the fighting that occurred around the farm of Larkin Poe. The program will begin at the battlefield's visitor center and will then car caravan to Poe Field, where the walking tour will begin. Learn more at nps.gov/chch.

-- Forest Families of Chattanooga will host a winter solstice glow walk at 5 p.m. Saturday at Camp Jordan, 323 Camp Jordan Parkway, East Ridge. Attendees will learn about the natural cycles of the solar system and will get to experience night walking with provided glow sticks and other fun lights. -- St. Elmo Stroll and Luminaria Festival will be from 5-9 p.m. Saturday at 55th Street and St. Elmo Avenue. The annual event, now in its fourth year, brings the neighborhood together for a night of celebration while raising money for local nonprofits. -- EPB has its annual holiday window display on view through Jan. 1 at its main office, 10 W. M.L. King Blvd. This year's theme is "Chattanooga Polar Palooza," featuring winter-themed carnival games and characters. -- Festive Forest, held in partnership with the Better Business Bureau, EPB, Chattanooga Parks and Outdoors and BlueCross BlueShield, will be on display through Jan. 1 at Miller Park, 928 Market St. The display features numerous Christmas trees decorated and sponsored by local companies and nonprofits. -- Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum, 4119 Cromwell Road, continues to host several Christmas-themed experiences this season. The North Pole Limited, Christmas Daylight Express and Nightcap with St. Nick experiences will run through Dec. 23. -- Ice on the Landing continues for the season at First Horizon Pavilion, 1801 Reggie White Blvd. Admission costs $14 for adults and $12 for children 12 and under. -- Nooga Lights continues two seasonal light shows in the Chattanooga area. From sunset-10 p.m. Friday-Sunday at Soddy-Daisy Park, 12000 Dayton Pike, there will be a drive-through show with lighting designs synchronized to music on the radio. Cost is $20 per vehicle. The drive-through show will run through Dec. 29, opening nightly beginning Friday. From sunset-10 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and sunset-11 p.m. Friday-Saturday at the Chattanooga Choo Choo, 1400 Market St., there will be a walk-through light show with lighting designs synchronized to music. -- North Georgia Holiday Spectacular will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday, 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday-Monday at the Colonnade, 264 Catoosa Circle, Ringgold. Some shows are sold out. The show is a large, high-energy holiday musical production, featuring local singers, dancers, comedians, stilt walkers and more. -- Chattanooga Parks and Outdoors will host An Afternoon of Holiday Cheer from noon-4 p.m. Saturday at Miller Park, 928 Market St. There will be holiday tunes as attendees make their way through the Festive Forest.
