Health officials confirm two West Nile virus-related deaths in Fremont County

FREMONT COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV) - The Fremont County Department of Public Health and Environment is urging the community to protect themselves after they confirmed two West Nile virus-related deaths in the county.

Health officials confirmed the two deaths on Monday but did not provide information on who died or when the deaths occurred.

"We are deeply saddened by the two recent West Nile virus-related deaths in our community. This is a reminder of the seriousness of the disease, and I urge everyone to take precautions to protect themselves and their loved ones," said Paula Buser, Public Health Director.

Health officials said West Nile virus primarily spreads through bites from an infected mosquito, and the virus can develop in the body within two to 14 days after the bite occurs.

According to officials, anyone can be affected by the virus, but those 60 or older and those with certain medical conditions are at a higher risk of severe illness.
