Final art crawl of the year in the Jersey City moves into Journal Square

Art lovers and community members are invited to join in Art Crawl Journal Square, happening on Saturday, Sept. 21, from 3 to 7 p.m.

The event kicks off at two main hubs: SMUSH Gallery, 340 Summit Ave., and Mana Contemporary, 888 Newark Ave.

Now in its third year, ART 14C's Art Crawl continues to bring together art enthusiasts to explore Jersey City's culturally vibrant neighborhoods. This time the event will focus exclusively on the arts, merging captivating art exhibitions and open studios in one walkable, art-filled afternoon.

This year is the first time Jersey City's art crawls have taken place outside of Downtown Jersey City. This year's events included locations such as the Heights in May and Bergen-Lafayette in June.

"It was great to walk these neighborhoods and see people visiting and doing the same thing," said Robinson Holloway of Art Fair 14C, who has organized the Jersey City art crawls. "There are so many dots spread across this mammoth city to see everything. So, it's a way for us to encourage people to come out and see Journal Square."

The Journal Square edition of the Art Crawl will feature five galleries and arts spaces as well as more than six artist open studios, stretching from as far north as Mana Contemporary through to SMUSH gallery on Summit Avenue.

Highlights include an exhibition by Saint Peter's University's Fine Arts Faculty, Poetry in the Galleries at Monira Foundation in collaboration with Jersey City Reads Poems and a solo show at SMUSH by Buttered Roll.

Other shows include Hudson County Community College's student show "Shifting Horizons" at the Dineen Hull Gallery, while other places like Mana Contemporary and 35 Journal Square will have studios open in their galleries.

Among the artists who will be exhibiting during the Journal Square Art Crawl is Nohi Mehrotra, whose work can be seen at 2787 John F. Kennedy Blvd., #307B. Mehrotra is an Indian artist with synesthesia, a condition that causes sensory crossover, such as associating certain letters, numbers or sounds with certain colors.

Other artists include David Rios Ferreira of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Daniel Guzman from DGA Studios, who can be seen at 35 Journal Square.

The Jersey City Night Market will also take place during the event, offering food options to visitors in the Journal Square area.

The event is underwritten by a grant from Goldman Sachs and will be the fifth and final crawl for 2024 before Art Crawl returns in March 2025.
