Irish households warned not to kill daddy long legs in September and October

Daddy long legs can be super unpleasant to look at, however, they could be the solution to your major spider problem during September and October - also known as spider season

People might be getting sick and tired of coming across all sorts of spiders all over their houses.

You might think the best thing to do is get rid of them, however, you should actually leave one particular spider alone - and it's a daddy long legs.

While they can appear in any part of your house, they are really common in corners, behind furniture or in the backs of presses.

Daddy long legs, also known as pholcus phalangioides, are normally slow moving.

However, they are a lot more useful than you might have originally thought as they eat insects and other arachnids, such as large house spiders like tegenaria species..

Instead of throwing them outside or killing them, it's recommended that you leave them where they are as they can decrease your chances of running into much more frightening spiders around this time of the year.

September is a high point for spider activity as this period is considered spider season due to their mating habits.

Many spiders find their way into your home via your windows and open doors during the summer.

You will find that this will happen when people keep them open to help circulate the air or to introduce a cool breeze to their rooms - this is essentially an open invitation to spiders and insects.

The entire spider season normally spans from mid-August until early October in Ireland and the United Kingdom.

Male spiders move more frequently in order to find a female spider, who tend to stay put.

They enter houses looking for females to procreate with after spending the spring and summer months feeding.

If you don't come across many daddy long legs in your home or would prefer to try and keep your home as spider-free as possible, there are other ways to address the arachnid problem.

One of those is keeping your windows and doors closed at all times, regardless of if it's day or night.

It may also be a good idea to seal up any small spaces, such as cracks in your window sills, floorboards, around your doors or in the bricks of your home.

Skirting boards and kickboards are also great hiding spaces for spiders.
