MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Over 500 people gathered at the University of South Alabama for the 2024 Mobile Heart Walk for a heartfelt event aiming at boosting heart health awareness and raising crucial funds for cardiovascular research.
"Had a natural trail, scenic view for this year's walk so very content," said Eric Lee, Development Director of the Alabama Gulf Coast American Heart Association.
For Kay Lang and Jontaisha, participating in the Heart Walk is an annual initiative.
"I had a daughter that had a heart transplant about 11 years ago," Lang shared. "So every year, we try to walk in support for her and then also to just kind of help be someone that gives advice and information about heart problems, heart issues and being heart healthy in general."
Lang says her daughter, C'Ce, was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy as a young child. The disease affects the heart muscle, making it harder for the heart to pump blood properly. Despite having surgery, Lang says she passed away.
"We still represent for her but we just try to help others not go through what we went through," Lang adds.
A powerful message as Lang and Jontaisha honor their loved ones' memory.
"I love it," said Jontaisha. "I'm real active so I be pushing everybody that be like kind of behind him telling them, you got this, you got this keep going."
Event organizers say the goal is to raise $200,00 and so far they have secured $178,500. To donate, click here.
