Grand jury indicts 30-year-old Onalaska man for drug distribution, firearms possession

Nelly has been arrested and accused of having illegal drugs at a casino near St. Louis.

A federal grand jury in the Western District of Wisconsin indicted 30-year-old Efrain Estrada of Onalaska on Wednesday for drug distribution, illegal possession of firearms and maintaining a drug trafficking site.

The indictment alleged that Estrada attempted to possess 400 grams or more of fentanyl intended for distribution, distributed fentanyl, and possessed 500 grams or more of methamphetamine intended for distribution.

Estrada also allegedly possessed, as a felon, five rifles, two shotguns, two handguns, and multiple types of ammunition. Finally, the indictment charged Estrada with possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking and maintenance of a drug trafficking place.

If convicted, he faces a minimum 10 year sentence for his drug possession charges, with a maximum penalty of a life sentence. The firearms possession charge carries a maximum penalty of 15 years of prison time.

Furthering drug trafficking with a firearm has a minimum penalty of five years with a maximum sentence of life in prison. The distribution charge and maintaining a trafficking place charge have no minimums, but do have maximum sentences of 20 years in prison.

A press release from the Western District of Wisconsin federal grand jury said the case was brought forward as part of coordinated efforts under Project Safe Neighborhoods.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Wisconsin Department of Justice, Division of Criminal Investigation, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, La Crosse Sheriff's Office, La Crosse Police Department, and the Madison Police Department all took part in the investigation.

U.S. Attorneys David Reinhard and Steven Ayala will prosecute the case.

Estrada is currently being held in La Crosse County Jail on a $250,000 bond.
