New chair announced for Oxfordshire young carers charity

Dr Sarah Broadhurst has been announced as the new chair of trustees of an Oxfordshire charity.

She will lead Be Free Young Carers, a charity supporting young carers throughout the county.

Dr Broadhurst steps into the role following the departure of David Wells, who served as chair for the past four years.

Sabiene, of Be Free Young Carers, said: "We are sad to say goodbye to David and thank him for his support and direction while he was chair of Be Free Young Carers.

"As our charity grows, adapts and strengthens as a countywide charity, I am excited to be working with Sarah in leading Be Free Young Carers to the next level.

"As the only independent charity in Oxfordshire providing support to young carers, it's important that we remain sustainable, impactful and current to the needs of young carers in Oxfordshire.

"This is a hugely exciting time to be part of the Be Free Young Carers team and we welcome Sarah to the board as chair.

"Never has the need been more apparent for young carers and I am looking forward to working with Sarah in doing everything we can to support young carers in need in our community, helping them thrive and excel."

Dr Broadhurst brings a wealth of experience to the charity, having served as CEO of the Autism Education Trust for the past six years.

She has also worked as a principal consultant and lead for carers at the Institute of Public Care at Oxford Brookes University.

Her background as a chartered psychologist is expected to strengthen the charity's wellbeing services and ensure it continues to meet the mental health needs of young carers.

The charity acknowledged Mr Wells' contributions, highlighting his role in expanding services into Oxford City and West Oxfordshire.

Dr Broadhurst said: "The charity is incredibly grateful for the support of David Wells across the past four years.

"David has helped the charity reach new levels in its growth and impact including the introduction of our services into Oxford City and West Oxfordshire.

"David has been absolutely invaluable to the charity, and the team are very thankful for the support and guidance that David has provided.

"He will be incredibly missed."

Be Free Young Carers supports children and young people in Oxfordshire who care for family members.

With Dr Broadhurst now in post, Be Free Young Carers said it is focusing on its next phase of countywide growth and expanding support for the increasing number of young carers across Oxfordshire.
