Sleep in Heavenly Peace organization starts making the free beds for the first time

PARKERSBURG, W.Va . (WTAP) - A non-profit organization in Jackson County begins the process of making free beds for children.

Sleep in Heavenly Peace in Jackson County West Virginia is a non-profit organization that is nationwide through the United States.

According to the SHP Jackson County president, Steve Westfall the Jackson Count location is the fifth SHP organization in West Virginia.

Saturday, August 9 the Jackson County location began its bed building project for the first time since opening.

SHP provides free beds for child ages 3-17 and there are no income requirements to receive a free bed, along with the bed you will receive a mattress, sheets, pillow and comforter.

Westfall says he just wants to provide beds to kids who do not have beds at home.

"When I grew up, we didn't know we were poor, I grew up on a farm in Braxton County, but I had a bed," said Westfall. "It's just unbearable to me to think that kids are sleeping on the floor or on a couch and don't have a bed, once we saw this need, which there is a need, so everybody takes that to heart and want to provide beds for kids who don't have one."

According to Westfall, the Jackson County rotary group and local volunteers are helping them build the beds throughout this week and plan to be finished by next Thursday, August 14.

Westfall described the process of making the beds as an assembly line.

"It's like an assembly line, someone cuts the boards, then it goes to sanding, drilling," said Westfall. "Side pieces go one place, and headboards go to be branded with SHP on them."
