Dec. 6 -- LIMA -- A former vacant Kmart building has been revived.
Located at 2200 Allentown Road, U-Haul, a moving truck, trailer, and self-storage rental company, officially opened Nov. 18 after purchasing the 13.4-acre property in 2023, according to a press release.
Implementation of the U-Haul Adaptive Reuse program led to the eco-friendly repurposing of a vacant big-box store into a state-of-the-art retail, moving, and self-storage facility that offers 700 indoor climate-controlled storage units with high-tech security features at affordable price points.
The new location is one mile from the former full-service facility at 1608 Elida Road which has served customers since 1978.
"Over the years, we have outgrown our store at 1608 Elida Road in all aspects," said Logan Minnich, U-Haul Company of Northwestern Ohio president in a press release sent to The Lima News. "The new location features space with 20 times the capacity, so we can offer a greater selection of self-move and self-storage products. This building conversion will allow us to better serve the residents of Allen County."
U-Haul owns the adjacent retail shopping plaza and plans to continue leasing space to current tenants, with U-Haul of Lima becoming the main anchor store for the revitalized complex.
The location also offers a limited number of outdoor drive-up storage units; truck and trailer sharing services; a retail showroom with boxes and moving supplies; U-Box portable moving containers; drive-in load/unload areas for storage customers; professional hitch installation and towing accessories; green programs, and more.
The full-service store is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and Saturday, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
