A-Train's redemption arc was hinted at as early as Season 1, which depicted him as one of the more redeemable members of the Seven. The show delved deep into his Compound V addiction and eventual recovery; his turnabout came after his near-death experience in Season 3, when he overstrained his heart and collapsed after killing Blue Hawk. Fans noticed how he transformed from remorseless villain to tragic hero in his attempts to reconcile with his family and community. Season 4 confirmed he's finally sided with Butcher and his crew after he was exposed as their mole in the Seven.

The Boys Fleshed Out A-Train's Redemption Arc

Usher's character has been aiming for redemption since Herogasm. A-Train tried to leverage his influence to help his brother Nate's cause in Season 3, but that backfired when Blue Hawk botched his forced apology, going amok and permanently crippling Nate. A-Train kills Blue Hawk at Herogasm in retaliation. Usher said that turning point developed naturally in the script during his conversations with Kripke. "The way that Eric gets your input on what he's thinking is to tell you what's happening to the people around you because of your storyline," he told Collider in 2022.

A-Train's Redemption in The Boys Gives the Heroes Another Spy

The Boys Season 4 adds another Vought mole to the team thanks to A-Train's quest to redeem himself and bring down Homelander's empire.

"He'll say things like, 'We're trying to figure out how he can get redemption for his brother getting injured,'" he continued. "He won't really say how that happens or how it relates to me, but he'll get my feedback on it based on something that happens to my brother, or a conversation I'll have with Ashley. He wants to bounce an idea off of someone else to see how A-Train feels about it, and then the story plays out from there. It's a very interesting process." Usher has yet to tease his character's arc in Season 5, but he confirmed that A-Train is extremely worried over his reckoning after the Season 4 finale.

"He's definitely looking over his shoulder," he told TV Line. "At no point would you ever just feel confident that you're not going to be touched if you're A-Train, because you know how big of a betrayal Homelander is going to feel from you." Vought covered up A-Train's betrayal, announcing he's deployed overseas for a top-secret mission, "effective immediately." A-Train's return could turn the tide of the supe war in Butcher's favor; fans also expect Queen Maeve would return in the final season to earn her redemption.

The Boys Seasons 1 to 4 is streaming on Prime Video. Season 5 currently does not have a release date.
