'It's been done before - we'll give it our best shot'

Maidstone United Women are aiming to emulate the club's men in pulling off a major FA Cup shock this weekend.

The Stones are looking forward to the biggest match in their history when they visit Plymouth Argyle in a first-round tie at Home Park on Sunday (2pm).

It will be an experience to savour as Tori Campbell's side run out at the Pilgrims' 18,000-capacity stadium.

They're huge underdogs against a side who play four levels above them, just below Women's Super League 2.

But upsets happen, as Maidstone know only too well, given the men's extraordinary fourth-round win at Ipswich under George Elokobi two seasons ago.

United's 2-1 victory at Portman Road serves as inspiration for player-boss Campbell and her squad, and she's been able to speak to Elokobi for advice.

"It's been done before in Maidstone - I'm sure we'll give it our best shot," said Campbell.

"I had a conversation with George Elokobi this week and I said to him, give me your best advice going into this, because it's the same league gap as they had with Ipswich.

"One of the biggest things he said was just enjoy it, it'll go by quickly, so just make the most of it, but don't fear them, don't be afraid of them, don't change too much.

"That's kind of the route we were going down anyway, so to hear that from him, it was really encouraging.

"George was the first person I went and found.

"Everyone's really supportive and people have offered advice here, there and everywhere, which has been lovely."

It's the first time a women's team playing under the Maidstone United name have played in the main draw since 1999 and they've won three games to reach this stage, including a 4-2 success over Badshot Lea in final qualifying.

They've earned £8,800 in prize money and there's another £6,000 on offer to the winners at Plymouth.

It will be a long day as the squad set off on the 245-mile trip to Home Park at 6.30am.

But it's all part of the experience for Maidstone, who are determined to make the most of the day.

They're being well looked after, with Electrical Connect Services and Total Machining Solutions funding coach travel, while Steve and Helen Terrell are sponsoring the players' food.

"We didn't necessarily want a local derby," said Campbell.

"As soon as Plymouth came out, I was like, 'I know this is going to be us', and our ball, No.20, got called out.

"It's fantastic to be going there.

"For some of the girls, myself included, it's the biggest game we've ever had the opportunity to be involved in.

"Enjoyment of the day and the occasion is also huge, and I think that comes naturally with confidence and being able to put on a good performance.

"The message is to stick to what we know.

"If we can get it right and play how we have been, then I think we will give Plymouth a good game.

"Plymouth are one level below WSL2, which is not to be dismissed, and they're also a full-time team, so naturally their fitness is going to be a cut above us, where we train outside of working full-time jobs.

"But we are a very physically fit team as it is, so I'm not too worried on that front.

"We have players in our team - George Culpitt and Ellie Hinkley - who have run a half-marathon in the morning and then come and played - and scored - in the afternoon.

"It's more about us getting the tactics right and doing the basics well."

Campbell opened the scoring inside a minute last weekend as Maidstone maintained their 100 per cent record with a 6-1 home win against Tunbridge Wells Foresters.

But the former Charlton and Ipswich striker will resist the chance to name herself in the starting XI at Plymouth.

She's set to feature at some point but will begin the afternoon alongside head coach Nathan Baker in the dugout.

"I want to enjoy the experience of being a manager at a ground like that, in that kind of situation," said Campbell.

"I think that's quite important, and I want to be there for the girls, to provide that leadership as well.

"So I'm not starting but I will be going on at some point, that's for sure. I can't not."
