TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. - A 23-year-old female bicyclist sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to a trauma center Saturday afternoon after being struck by a minivan while in a marked crosswalk near the intersection of Lime Street and U.S. Highway 19 North.
The crash occurred at approximately 3:40 p.m., according to the Tarpon Springs Police Department.
Police and Fire Departments responded to the scene on Lime Street, just west of US 19 North. Investigators determined that Angelina Gomez, 23, of Tarpon Springs, was riding her E-Bike northbound on the sidewalk on the west side of US 19. As she was crossing Lime Street within the marked crosswalk, she was hit by a 2018 Chrysler minivan.
The minivan was driven by 65-year-old John Vargas.

Gomez sustained serious injuries in the collision and was transported by ground ambulance to Bayonet Point Medical Center in Hudson, where she was admitted as a trauma alert.
The Tarpon Springs Police Traffic Homicide Unit was called to the scene to take over the investigation. As of the time of this report, the crash remains under active investigation. Authorities stated that there is currently no evidence of impaired driving on the part of either Vargas or Gomez.
