May 14 -- NOXON -- Cody Haggard threw a five-inning no-hitter, doubled and homered to lead Polson over Noxon-Thompson Falls 16-0 in high school baseball Tuesday.
Haggard faced the minimum 15 hitters in the game, which ended after five innings under the mercy rule.
He hit Noxon's Ian Brown with a pitch with two out in the second inning, but Brown was then caught stealing second by catcher Noah Agliano. Haggard retired the last nine hitters in order, four by strikeout. He fanned nine Red Devils total.
He also doubled to lead off the third inning, scoring on Maddox Bird's single; Landon Pablo's two-run single in the same inning put the Pirates up 6-0.
Haggard hit a solo home run to lead off the top of the fourth. Carson Emerson, Brayson DuMont, Pablo, Agliano and Haggard all hit RBI singles in a six-run fifth inning.
Polson improved to 13-5, 9-4 in the Northern A. Noxon fell to 4-10, 4-10.
Eureka 14, Ronan 4
RONAN -- Eureka pitcher Rowan Burow struck out 11 in five innings and drove in three runs as the Lions picked up an important win over Ronan Tuesday, clinching a play-in spot for next week's state tournament.
Burow's two-run single highlighted a five-run first inning for Eureka, who after Ronan closed to within one run scored the last nine runs of the game. The contest ended after five under the mercy rule.
Liam Jackson tripled and scored to spark a three-run third inning for Ronan; Lucas Johnston's RBI single drew the Chiefs to 5-4.
Tyce Van Orden doubled and scored to get a four-run fourth inning going for Eureka (11-4, 11-2 in North A games). Rogan Lytle and Emmet McKim had RBI singles in the frame, and Burow added a sacrifice fly that scored McKimm for a 9-4 lead. Lytle scored three runs.
Van Orden's two-run single and McKimm's two-run triple keyed Eureka's big fifth inning. Burow worked around a walk and struck out two in Ronan's half of the inning. The Chiefs lost for the seventh time in eight games and ended up 6-10-1.
Eureka will host a Southern Division opponent on Monday; the team and time are to be determined. The winner will make the State A tournament that runs May 22-24 in Hamilton.
Bigfork (11-5, 11-3 in league) will travel to a South A opponent yet to be determined for a chance to make state on Monday.
Whitefish 12, Hellgate 2
BONNER -- Sam Akey and Reed Boyer combined on a five-inning one-hitter and four Whitefish players drove in two runs each in the Bulldogs' win over Missoula Hellgate at Kelly Pine field.
Ryan Conklin had three hits, drove in two runs and scored three times out of the three hole for Whitefish; teammate M Brone also scored three times.
Drew Queen, Avery Caton and Finn Ryan also drove in two runs for Whitefish, who at 10-4 in league (12-5 overall) appear out of the play-in picture for the state tournament. Queen had a double among his two hits, as did Conklin.
Akey started on the hill and gave up one hit in three innings of work, along with two walks and one unearned run. He fanned three. Boyer threw the last two innings, allowing four walks but also striking out five.
