12-year-old girl shot by celebratory Christmas gunfire

A car wrecked while transporting a girl to the hospital after she was struck by gunfire from a bullet that police believe was fired as part of a Christmas celebration.

Authorities with Houston Police Department and Houston Fire Department responded to reports of a car accident involving two vehicles near the intersection of Westpark Drive and Hillcroft Avenue at around 11:45 p.m. Christmas Eve.

The only reported injury at the scene was a 12-year-old girl who had been shot in the leg earlier that night.

The girl was walking with her mother outside of an apartment complex when a stray bullet from celebratory gunfire hit her in the leg. A neighbor at the complex drove by and saw the mother tending to her daughter's wound and offered to drive the pair to a nearby hospital.

The roads were wet due to last night's thunderstorms, and a collision occurred as the neighbor drove them.

Following the wreck, HFD officials transported the girl to the hospital, where she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

"We just want everyone to be safe," HPD Sgt. Ali said. "Everybody wants to be outside and have a good time. We just want everybody to do it safely."

There is no word on whether or not officers know who fired the gun at this time.
