'Privilege to host' remembrance photography exhibition

Remembrance services are deeply moving, and it was a privilege to host the 'LEST WE FORGET' photographic exhibition by Barbara Ann Mcloughlin in the Senedd. A Newport resident, Barbara's photographs capture powerful moments of remembrance across South Wales.

The Welsh Government is committed to supporting veterans in Wales. Veterans who have health conditions which are linked to their service receive priority access to NHS Wales care, while the National Housing Pathway for Veterans helps ex-service personnel find and maintain secure homes, including tailored advice for those at risk of homelessness.

We will mark Carers Rights Day on Thursday, and the Welsh Government has confirmed a further £15.75m will be invested into schemes supporting unpaid carers in Wales. The Short Breaks Scheme enables unpaid carers of all ages to take personalised breaks from their caring responsibilities. The Carers Support Fund provides emergency financial assistance to unpaid carers on low incomes, helping them purchase essential items such as food, household goods or pay utility bills.

As I saw on a recent visit to Watkin-Davies Pharmacy in Bettws, community pharmacies offer an important local service. The Welsh Government has announced the expansion of the Common Ailments Scheme to treat more illnesses, including urinary tract infections. 99 per cent of community pharmacies already test and treat sore throats for free as part of the scheme. As well as providing treatment for a range of minor illnesses, your local pharmacist can advise if you do need to see a GP.

Preparations are underway across the NHS for the challenges of winter. Vaccines have been bought centrally for the first time to fight the predicted increase in flu cases. Everyone eligible for a free flu vaccine can contact their GP or local pharmacy to make an appointment. You can check if you are eligible on the Public Health Wales website: www.phw.nhs.wales

As your Member of Senedd, I am here to help Newport West constituents with issues which are devolved in Wales, including health, education, climate change, transport, housing, social care, the environment, culture and sport.

If you have any concerns, issues or questions related to the Senedd, please do not hesitate to get in touch. You can email me at [email protected] or call 01633 376627.
