Coastal flood advisory for Delaware as storm bring rain, high winds before Halloween

A coastal flood advisory is in effect for Delaware and surrounding states as a storm brings heavy rain and high winds to the area.

The storm will bring heavy winds, which likely will stick around for Halloween.

The National Weather Service in Mount Holly, New Jersey, said a strong storm system is forecast to bring high winds, heavy rainfall, coastal flooding and a possible isolated severe storm to Delaware and parts of Maryland, Pennsylvania and New Jersey on Oct. 30 and into Oct. 31.

Wind gusts up to 50 mph in Delaware

Widespread wind gusts between 35 and 40 mph are likely Oct. 30 and Oct. 31 throughout most of Delaware with winds between 40 and 45 mph possible for areas around Rehoboth Beach, according to the National Weather Service.

By Friday, wind gusts nearing 40 to 50 mph could result in some tree damage and isolated power outages.

Strong easterly winds are expected Oct. 30, followed by a lull during the night, then strong westerly winds expected on Oct. 31, the National Weather Service said.

Heavy rain expected in Delaware

Throughout the area, 1 to 2 inches of rainfall is expected on Oct. 30 and could be enough to result in some isolated minor flooding in urban, poorly drained, and low-lying areas, the weather service said.

The heaviest rain is most likely to fall in Wilmington with 1 to 1.5 inches projected while nearly all of New Castle and Kent County are expected to get 1 to 1.5 inches, the weather service said. Most of Sussex County should expect 0.5 to 1 inches of rainfall.

Higher amounts near 3 inches are possible, the weather service added.

Severe storms possible

An isolated severe thunderstorm is possible on Oct. 30 with locally damaging wind gusts, resulting in tree damage and power outages.

While a severe thunderstorm is possible throughout the region, the greatest risk will be near and south/east of the Philadelphia.

These may occur midday Thursday, between 10 am. and 4 p.m.

Coastal flooding in Delaware

Widespread minor coastal flooding could cause some roadway flooding, while high surf and strong onshore winds may lead to some beach erosion along the coastal areas of Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania including the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays and the tidal Delaware River, the weather service said.

Minor flooding will become increasingly widespread, peaking during the afternoon and evening high tides on of Oct. 30 before subsiding.

Storm hazards along the coast

Along with coastal flood advisory for Kent and Sussex counties, a gale warning will be in effect for Atlantic coastal waters of Delaware and New Jersey along with the Delaware Bay late Oct. 29 through Oct. 30.

A second period of gale force winds expected Oct. 31 into the night.

Gale force wind gusts will be between 35 and 40 knots, making conditions difficult as seas will be between 8 and 12 feet.
