BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - The Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission voted Thursday to give license holders in four categories a 25% break on their license fees for renewing their licenses in 2025.
The reduction for licensees for cultivators, processors, secure transporters, and the state testing laboratory was less than some licensees had been pressing for.
Some licensees argue they're paying tens of thousands of dollars for licenses, but have been unable to sell any product because the license-awarding process for the largest category - the integrated licenses - remains stuck in litigation and mediation.
The AMCC and attorneys for plaintiffs in multiple lawsuits held mediation hearings Tuesday in Montgomery and are scheduled to hold more mediation next week as they try to find a way forward after more than a year of delays following three failed attempts by the AMCC to issue licenses in the integrated category.
The Alabama Cannabis Commission has spent $7.396 million of your tax dollars since Fiscal Year 2022, with $1.05 million of that going towards legal expenses, according to a WBRC 6 News On Your Side Investigates analysis of the state's expenditures.
