FARGO -- To help keep children safe this holiday season, the team at Sanford's Safe Kids Fargo-Moorhead is giving out helpful reminders.
They say first, make sure toys and electronics are age appropriate and read all warning labels and instructions that come with them. Keep toys separate if there is a large age gap between your kids. Buy safety gear like helmets to go along with toys like bikes and scooters.
They also say to ensure battery-operated toys have a screwed-on latch so kids cannot access them. Button batteries in toys can burn internal tissues if swallowed. Parents should check all toys for damage and choking hazards.
They say children 4 years old and younger should not have access to anything that will not fit down a toilet paper roll.
"A lot of people don't know how to do CPR. And our department offers free infant and child CPR classes so that parents can react," Safe Kids coordinator Katie Heck said.
More than 155,000 kids age 12 or younger were treated in the ER for toy-related injuries in 2023, according to estimates from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
