A huge band of rain pushing east across Wales has put the South West firmly in its sights.

The Met Office said it is bringing a soggy end to the weekend for many people and comes as a severe weather warning for wind is about to come into force from 8pm on Sunday (September 14) to Monday at 6pm across Wales and much of England.

Radar forecast maps show the band of rain moving east to west across the M5 corridor with the worst of the weather due around 4.30pm.

Further rain is expected until around 7pm on Sunday and then into the early hours of Sunday.

While former Environment Agency manager and weather expert Dave Throup said: "Haven't seen a radar pic like this for a while. Wales getting an absolute drenching."

The rain comes ahead of what is expected to be gale force winds likely overnight into Monday.

Wind gusts up to 50mph can be expected on Monday at around noon.

Today: A band of rain, with prolonged or heavy downpours, spreading northeastwards throughout much of the day, bringing widespread strong winds, with gales likely. Heavy and blustery showers following later. Feeling muggy compared to recent days. Maximum temperature 18 °C.

Tonight: Residual rain quickly clearing eastwards through the evening, with clear spells and heavy, blustery showers overnight. Remaining very windy, with gale force winds likely. Minimum temperature 12 °C.

Monday: Strong, gale-force winds and heavy, blustery showers continue on Monday. Some brighter spells possible between the showers, and feeling cool when exposed to the wind. Maximum temperature 17 °C.

Outlook for Tuesday to Thursday: A brighter and drier day on Tuesday before turning wet and windy again on Wednesday. Winds easing on Thursday with sunny spells and a scattering of showers. Temperatures around average.
