Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows drivers win at historic motor races

Auto racers from Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows were all over the podium at the BC Historic Motor Races at Mission Raceway recently.

The 36th running of the B.C. Historic Motor Races took place on Aug. 16 and 17 at the raceway, attracting vintage racers from across Western Canada and Washington state for two days of racing. The event was hosted by the Vintage Racing Club of B.C., and the Sports Car Club of B.C.

Malcolm McQueen of Maple Ridge won the first two races in the Group B class for cars 1979 and older, driving his 1972 Datsun 510.

In Group C, for vintage cars from 1980 to 2000, Brad Zimmerman of Maple Ridge won the first two races in his 1995 Nissan 240SX.

Following that, Pitt Meadows driver Jason Wesson took races three and four in Group C, behind the wheel of his 1990 Acura Integra.

Maple Ridge's Byron Meston finished second in the combined Jim Lathan Memorial for Groups A, B and C.

In the open wheel/sports racer class, Pitt Meadows driver Ray Stec won four contests in his 1996 Van Diemen RF96.

This year's race honoured the late Tom Johnston, a racer, builder and author who had a lasting impact on Canadian motorsport, and who was a fixture at historic racing events. He passed away earlier this year.
