The Seneca County Sheriff's Office has added a new tool to its traffic safety efforts -- and it didn't cost local taxpayers a dime.

Officials announced this week that the department acquired a speed and message trailer through a grant from the New York State Healthy Neighborhoods Program. The portable unit is already in use across the county, where it's being deployed in areas known for speeding and dangerous driving.

The trailer doesn't just track and display speeds -- it also serves as a digital message board during community events and emergencies. Sheriff Tim Thompson said the tool will help deputies target trouble spots more efficiently.

"Speeding continues to be a local issue and we are very excited to deploy this new speed trailer in the community," Thompson said. "Our members are committed to traffic safety, but we simply cannot be everywhere."

The grant-funded purchase came together through a partnership between the Seneca County Public Health Department, the Planning & Community Development Department, and the Sheriff's Office.

"This project was a great example of making our community safer through partnership," Thompson added.

Residents with traffic concerns -- or those who want to request the trailer in their neighborhood -- can email [email protected].
