Four fire engines on North Staffordshire road after reports of 'flames' - Stoke-on-Trent Live

Four fire engines were sent to a North Staffordshire lane to reports of 'flames' coming from the area. Crews say they were confronted with a 'large waste fire' in Betley.

Now Staffordshie Fire and Rescue Service have warned of the dangers around burning rubbish. Crews from four stations were sent to Waybutt Lane at 11.30pm on Saturday night.

A spokeswoman said: "Crews were called following reports of flames coming from the area. Four crews attended the scene and found a large waste fire. After speaking with the Environment Agency, the fire was monitored as a controlled burn."

Dale Glover, a watch manager who attended the incident, said: "When crews arrived, we discovered a large fire of burning waste. We spoke with those at the scene around fire safety, including how burning waste can often get out of control. We'd like to remind everyone that the safest way to dispose of waste is to take it to a nearby tip. Burning waste at home can easily spread to fences, shrubbery and nearby homes, as well as the risk of releasing potentially hazardous chemicals into the air."
