Donald Trump has claimed to have solved America's autism 'crisis'.
In a press conference today, Trump called the rise of autism in the US 'one of most alarming medical crises in history,' citing a 400 percent surge over the last several decades.
Trump said the FDA will immediately notify physicians to warn pregnant women not to take Tylenol - which is known as paracetamol here in the UK. He did however say it can be taken if 'medically necessary,' for example in cases of 'extremely high fever.'
He went on to warn that 'women should talk to their doctors about limiting the use of this medication' and 'ideally' not use it at all.
Trump also agreed with the move to stop recommending the combined MMR and varicella vaccine.
Some believe the active ingredient in Tylenol, acetaminophen, may hinder fetal brain development, but research has largely been inconsistent. As a result major health bodies still recommend it for women who are pregnant..
Trump said: "You know it's something artificial. With Tylenol, don't take it. There's not an alternative to that."
Dr Monique Botha, associate professor in social and developmental psychology at Durham University, said: "There are many studies which refute a link.
"But the most important was a Swedish study of 2.4 million births published in 2024 which used actual sibling data and found no relationship between exposure to paracetamol in utero and subsequent autism, ADHD or intellectual disability. This suggests no causal effect of paracetamol in autism."
The announcement comes as the Trump administration and Kennedy have made it a top priority to tackle America's rising autism rates.
One in 31 children in the US are now estimated to have the condition compared to one in 150 children in 2000. Experts say the increase is largely due to a loosening of the definition of autism and because doctors have become better at detecting the condition.
Others, including RFK Jr, have suggested toxins in the environment, older parents or maternal obesity could be behind the rise.
In the UK, the NHS website says "paracetamol is the first choice of painkiller if you're pregnant. It's commonly taken during pregnancy and does not harm your baby".
